= Both father and son have lived in the same globe for years.

d) Why does the speaker not able to understand the child ?
= The speaker is not able to understand the child because they speak very little with each other. They talk like strangers. Both of them can not share each others likes and dislikes.


Silence surrounds us. I would have
Him prodigal, returning to
His father's house, the home he knew,
Rather than see him make and move

Shaping from sorrow a new love.

= Love can be shaped out of sorrow.

= In the passage the word ' prodigal ' means ' extravagant' . 

Q) How is the father's helplessness brought out in the poem, Father to Son ?
= The father's helplessness has been brought out throughout the poem. At the very beginning of the poem we have come to know that there is no intimacy between father and son. The father does not understand his son. They talk very little with each other. If they talk they talk like strangers.  The father can not share what his son loves. Their likes and dislikes are different. The father wants his son to live with him. But his son does not like his father's world. In this way the helplessness of the father has been brought out in the poem, "Father to Son" .

= The father's greatest wish for his son was to see him to return his father's house rather than  to make and move in his imaginary world. Even, he would forgive him if he returns to his father's house.

= The father can not understand his son though they have been living in the same house for years. The father can not share what his son loves . The son also does not like what his father likes. Their likes and dislikes are different. That is why they speak like strangers.

= Both the father and son is different in their choices. When they meet they talk very little with each other. If they talk they talk like strangers. That is why silence surrounds them.
